The term granite comes from the Latin root word granum, meaning "grain". Geologically speaking, granite is a plutonic rock in which the mineral quartz makes up 10 to 50 per cent of the felsic components, and the ratio of alkali to total feldspar is between 65 and 95 per cent.

The granite group is one of the most versatile stone types available. Granite, and granite-like materials, are capable of taking a wide variety of finishes, which allow the designer to custom-tailor the stone to the aesthetic or performance requirements of a specific application. The occurrence of granite is worldwide and is commonly available. Granite is a very sturdy stone and most of the time is very difficult to cut.
An investment in granite stone guarantees you beauty laid in stone for years and years to come. Simple care, simple cleaning and some maintenance can make your pieces of granite stone look like new forever and still keep that magical sparkle.
Granite is a hard natural igneous rock having visible crystalline texture that is formed essentially of quartz and orthoclase or microcline. The main constituents of granite are feldspar, quartz and Biotite. However, these constituents vary in different percentages in the final product and are responsible for the different texture, strength and colour of the final product. The percentage composition of feldspar varies between 65-95 per cent, of quartz can extend from 10 to 60 per cent and that of biotite lies between 10 to 15 per cent.

The granite stone has some excellent physical properties that make it unique from other stones. The porosity or permeability of granite is almost negligible and therefore this makes it one of the best choices to make. Granite is also thermally stable and shows no variation with a change in temperature and can therefore handle heat really well and is therefore a good choice for kitchen worktops. The stone is also highly resistant to chemical erosion and weathering.
Granite also shows good consistency with regards to colour and texture and is the hardest building stone around and this is what lends its excellent wear-resistance.
