Natural stone, being the most natural choice for a rustic look, is given a tumbled finish so that the its age is highlighted. Creating a homely environment, it is also functional when stone is used for backsplashes. The contemporary Italian look is accentuated with stainless steel accessories and stone countertops. With nothing more elegant and durable, natural stone countertops come in a vast number of choices.
Stone being naturally porous, requires special sealants. Granite, though, is most durable chip and scratch resistant. Place hot pots, cut, roll dough. Granite, being least porous, requires resealing only once a year.
Marble, being smooth and cool, is the traditional choice for rolling dough and making pastries. But it requires frequent sealing to prevent stains. Limestone is even more porous. Soapstone is hardly high maintenance, and treating it with mineral oil brings out a darker, richer colour.
